My Life Online is a comic opera in one Act for soprano and pianist. Kay, an immigration lawyer, hasn’t left her apartment in over a year. She visits her therapist on Skype, takes a virtual yoga class on Zoom, works though Web-ex, and orders everything online. She has virtually and literally shut herself in – as we all tend to do – by spending so much time behind various screens. Convenience and comfortable yoga pants have replaced the stress of dealing with people face to face. However, a crisis involving a child she has never met invokes Kay’s compassion and calls her out of her self-imposed isolation.
My Life Online is a funny but poignant commentary on our need for real community and human connection. It was composed by Scott Eyerly, a professor at Julliard, and premiered in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2023. Mobile Opera’s production will be a professional premiere for the USA. Running time is about 45 minutes.
